Obama & Congress to raise cigarette tax

The Americans for Tax Reform just dropped a press release on the 111th Congress's first tax hike: an excise tax on cigarettes. Congress will be tacking on 61 cents, thus increasing the tax by 156%.

ATR notes:
Who will be burdened? The middle- and low-income Americans that they said they will not raise taxes on:

* 55 percent of smokers are “working poor”
* One in four smokers live below the poverty line
* On average, smokers, whose median income is a little more than $36,000, make about 30 percent less than non-smokers.

It's interesting to note that, as ATR points out, Obama promised in the presidential debates that "if you make less than a quarter of a million dollars a year, you will not see a single dime of your taxes go up."

Whoops! Unless, of course, he only meant their federal income taxes wouldn't go up. Gotta watch out for that fine print!

Richard, thanks for blogging on this issue. It's important that we tell Congress how we feel about tax increases, especially in regards to SCHIP.

If you and/or your readers have a second, I encourage you to take action against this tax increase by sending a letter to your Representative and Senators using our action alert at http://capwiz.com/atr/issues/alert/?alertid=12421966&type=CO .

Let me know if you need anything else.

Best,
Adam with Americans for Tax Reform

Thats right just keep up'ing the cigarette taxes...that'll fix things for sure. Yeah Right!
I don't understand why they need to keep taxing cigarettes so much, why not start taxing turkey more, or cheddar cheese, bread maybe, what about milk. To me that sounds much better.

Obama signed it today, about 62.5 cents a pack, so it's done. Instead of taxing cigarettes all the time, why don't they just add a dime tax to each can of beer? THAT tax hasn't been increased in decades, and you can die faster from being hit by a drunk driver than you can from second-hand smoke. And the drunks won't care. They'll continue to pay anyway.
